Good morning and welcome to Day 3 of 31 Days of Resolutions!
Mornings in my house can be a little crazy sometimes. Between my daughter wanting breakfast immediately upon waking up, the dog needing to go outside as soon as possible, and my husband getting ready to go to work, mornings seem to fly by.
One day, I’d like to be that mom who gets up before her family and spends time reading the Bible, journaling, and praying before everyone gets up; but that’s just not the stage I’m in right now. My two year-old is my alarm clock and she doesn’t have a snooze button! (I’ve tried!) I hit the ground running every morning and unfortunately, my husband is usually left to fend for himself. Now I’m not saying he isn’t totally capable of getting his lunch ready and getting himself out the door in the morning- because he totally is, but I like serving him when I can. Most days I’m lucky if I can give him a kiss before he heads out the door.
And then, when the poor guy gets home after a long day at work, it’s usually to a home in crisis mode. By 5:45 our daughter has had it. She’s hungry and tired and just wants my attention, but I’m usually in a frenzy trying to get dinner on the table around 6:15 so we can keep with her bedtime schedule. That means that when my husband comes home, I usually need him to help me with her. Long gone are the days before kids when we’d get home from work and talk about our day while I make dinner and he plays a game on the computer or peruses Facebook. So often during these days of toddler meltdowns and survival mode evenings do I forget to stop, for even just a moment, to give him a kiss and let him know how glad I am that he’s home.
Well not today. Today I will be intentional about showing my husband how much I love and appreciate him by putting everything else aside to focus on him. Sure, on the surface it might seem like just a quick gesture before and after work, but what it really says is that I remember why we do all of this- it’s because of our love for each other. That’s why he goes to work all day, that’s why I stay home with our daughter, that’s why I make dinner every night, and that’s why he comes home- because we love each other and the life we’re building together.
